A Local Pekin Podcast

In late 2021, I received a phone call from then Pekin Mayor Mark Luft. He shared with me his disappointment that our community was getting its news and information on what was happening locally via social media. Often that information was inaccurate, distorted, or just plain untrue. He shared with me some thoughts on creating a podcast that would broadcast objective, truthful news that provided context and perspective on current Pekin events. His follow up was “would you be interested in hosting it?” I told him I would, as long as I controlled the content, regardless of where that led. He showed no reluctance, insisting on my independence.
In thinking of a title for the podcast, I recalled the countless times people have asked me, “What’s the story with that construction out there?” or “What’s the story about what they’re doing over here?” Since my goal as host would be to address those questions, the title of “What’s the Story, Pekin?” seemed a natural fit. My pledge was to go to the source to get direct answers. If there were questions about our community, I’d interview the mayor. Questions about our schools, I’d talk to the Superintendent. I referred to them as the “authors” of the story.
This year, 2024, has been dedicated to Pekin’s Bicentennial. The site has been populated with many historical stories. There is even a series of “Bicentennial Bytes,” which are short little one or two minute vignettes narrated by students of District 108. Added historical stories are in the works.
Through mid-July of this year there are 72 episodes since inception in April 2022, and 10 Bicentennial Bytes.
Google “What’s the Story, Pekin” or go to your favorite podcast platform and check it out. Better yet, if you have a suggestion, send it to me at Pekinpodcast.com.
