The Salvation Army of Pekin – Your Support in Action

The Salvation Army Rust Transitional Center and Pathway of Hope Program provides temporary housing for single men, single women, and families experiencing homelessness. All individuals receive weekly case management meetings to identify the root cause of homelessness and start building stability through budgeting tools and life management skills with the main goal of securing steady income and moving on to permanent affordable housing.

Rodney’s Story
I spent the winter out there, almost a year. That was 2 years ago. It was a pretty good winter, and I almost went into hypothermia, my buddy did die out there. I did not want to spend another winter outside; I knew I wouldn’t make it. I was in pretty bad shape; my alcoholism was pretty bad, and I was eating out of garbage cans after restaurants would close. I was in a bad place mentally and physically.

I went to The Salvation Army and was able to get into their program. It was a huge adjustment, having a restroom and shower were probably the biggest changes. I needed to adjust emotionally, and the staff allowed me that time to settle into my new environment. My feet were in really bad shape, I was suicidal to a degree, I was struggling.

You will get out of this program what you put into it. They have lots of resources, more than just shelter and food. They are willing and capable to do so much more.

My caseworker was a jewel, I would have to put it like she finds a piece of china that’s broken, and she walks you through finding the pieces and putting them all back together just right with her professionalism, skill, and patience. When she’s done, she turns you loose, and sets you free. That’s what she did for me. I have been alcohol-free for almost 2 years, I have a job and my own apartment. So, to all of you who donate and support your local Salvation Army, thank you! They couldn’t have changed my life without you!

The Salvation Army 360 Life Center of Pekin also provides food pantry services, financial assistance programs, and Christmas Assistance to families experiencing individual emergencies.
