Catrina Klassen, Head of Youth Services at Pekin Public Library, begins decorating for the library’s, ‘The Nutcracker Experience,’ on Friday, December 6.

One of the most popular holiday traditions is the story of “The Nutcracker.” This holiday classic has a rich and fascinating history that connects literature, music, and ballet. The Pekin Public Library will host a family-friendly event inspired by “The Nutcracker” on Friday, December 6, from  11am-4pm, an early release day for District 108 schools.

Originating from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” published in 1816, the story blends fantasy with surreal elements. Hoffmann’s tale first introduces readers to Clara, her enchanted nutcracker, and the fantastical world that unfolds when the clock strikes midnight.

In the mid-19th century, the story caught the attention of the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who transformed it into a ballet. Premiering in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky’s adaptation included a captivating score that remains one of the most popular musical works associated with the holiday season.

The ballet, however, did not immediately gain popularity, as its initial reception was lukewarm. It wasn’t until the 20th century, particularly in the United States, that “The Nutcracker” blossomed into the classic we know today. The Nutcracker’s transformation is also tied closely to the evolution of ballet itself, as choreographers and dancers brought their interpretations to life.

From George Balanchine’s iconic 1954 version to more contemporary adaptations, each version has added layers of creativity, artistry, and cultural influence. Today, “The Nutcracker” is a staple of the holiday season, performed in theaters worldwide, with interpretations that reflect different cultural backgrounds and artistic styles. In Central Illinois alone, two ballet companies will be performing the classic, along with the classic music being played at multiple concerts.

The Pekin Public Library’s version is for all ages and will include two readings of the story at 12pm and 2:30pm, creating a Nutcracker ornament to take home, hot cocoa, several themed activities, and decorations galore!

Help us continue the legacy of “The Nutcracker” for the next generation by introducing this classic to your children and grandchildren. Exploring the origins and transformation of this story reveals a captivating journey that celebrates imagination, joy, and the magic of the holiday spirit.
