A Word from Mayor Mary - National Recognition for Local Progress
Recently, the City of Pekin received national recognition that reflects the kind of progress our community has been working toward for several years. The redevelopment of the former East Court Village Mall site was named a CoStar Impact Award winner for Redevelopment of the Year, placing Pekin among communities across the country that are finding ways to revitalize important spaces.
For many in Pekin, East Court Village Mall holds decades of memories. As central Illinois’ first enclosed shopping mall, it was once a hub of activity for our region. Like many malls across the country, however, it faced challenges as retail trends changed. Rather than allowing the site to remain underutilized, the City and its partners saw an opportunity to reimagine what that space could become.
This project represents more than redevelopment—it reflects a deliberate effort to adapt, invest, and move forward with purpose. Through strong partnerships and thoughtful planning, the site has been transformed into a modern development that supports new business activity, attracts residents, and strengthens one of our key corridors.
Awards like this are meaningful, but what matters most is what they represent. This recognition affirms that Pekin is willing to take on complex projects, make strategic investments, and see them through. It also highlights the work of our Council, staff, developers, and community members who continue to believe in Pekin’s future.
As with many projects of this scale, the redevelopment did not happen overnight. It required coordination, patience, and a shared vision for what this property could become. That same approach continues to guide our work across the city as we focus on infrastructure, economic development, and long-term planning.
We know there is still more work to do. But moments like this are a reminder that progress is happening and that Pekin is moving in the right direction. By continuing to plan ahead, work together, and pursue opportunities that strengthen our community, we are building a future that reflects both our history and our potential.
Our goal remains the same: to ensure Pekin is a place where businesses can invest, families can thrive, and residents can take pride in the direction of their city. This recognition is one more sign that we are achieving that goal—together.
