The Pekin Hometown Voice

Pekin Altrusa

Ladies and gentlemen, our first Pekin Altrusa after-school tutoring program was a success. Every student who participated in the program saw improvement in reading. Time flew by so quickly, and it’s hard to believe the school year is over. Students celebrated their hard work over the weekend with lots of treats and refreshments, balloons, gifts, family, books, and more reading. Pictured above, sitting in the circle, is tutor Mrs. Ferguson as she reads “Smart Cookie” to a group of eight before moving to the next activity. Tutor Jennifer Camden monitors paperwork behind the group to make sure everything flows smoothly for the celebration. Participants were very attentive, which is a testament to the program and great teamwork between the two tutors.

Pictured above is Mrs. Camden as she instructs the students on their fun drawing and coloring activity. Mrs. Ferguson has now switched gears to prepare the next activity of decorating cookies with frosting and sprinkles for devouring or a special art piece to admire. The celebration was another magical day of Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. Camden tag-teaming the tutoring sessions with group activities, one-on-one time, and snacks before for more focused learning. They did a great job with multitasking, switching activities, and keeping the students engaged during this process.

At the end of the celebration, each student received a gift bag and certificate of completion after their name was called to walk across our imaginary stage. During this time,  “Pomp and Circumstance” played in the background. Parents took pictures of the students while they happily received their certificate from their principal and posed for the camera. Mrs. Camden and Mrs. Ferguson, the program tutors, received Outstanding Tutor certificates as well. Everyone enjoyed the celebration and look forward to participating next year.
