Miller Center Hosts “Fleece and Thank You” Blanket-Making Event for Cancer Patients
On April 29th, the Miller Center hosted a heartwarming event in support of local cancer patients. During the “Fleece and Thank You” blanket-making session, 27 dedicated volunteers came together and crafted 28 cozy fleece blankets in just three hours. These blankets were donated to cancer patients at Pekin, Illinois Cancer Care, and brought both warmth and encouragement to individuals undergoing treatment.
This meaningful initiative is part of the Angel Hearts project, founded in 2013 by Nina in memory of her mother, Joan. Joan was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy, during which she experienced firsthand the comfort of receiving a handmade blanket in the cold treatment room. That simple gesture made a lasting impact on both Joan and Nina. After her mother’s passing later that year, Nina was inspired to carry on that spirit of kindness by organizing blanket donations for other patients.
What began as a daughter’s tribute has since evolved into a growing tradition of compassion. Nina’s vision has sparked countless acts of service, creating a ripple effect of care and community support. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds now take part, often returning year after year to lend their time and creativity. Events like this are a powerful reminder that small gestures—like a soft, colorful blanket—can offer not only physical comfort but also emotional healing. The Miller Center is proud to support this mission and extends heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and donors who made the event such a meaningful success.
