The Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization at Pekin Community High School (PCHS) plays a significant role not only at PCHS but also in the community.
“FFA is a youth organization that spreads the joy and love for agriculture and is working to keep the industry alive and thriving,” said Tyler Thomas, a PCHS senior, who is also the FFA president and has been a part of FFA for three and a half years.
When asked, “What is FFA to you?” fellow member, and junior at PCHS, Jag Riley responded, “To me, it’s kind of like a family, and in my opinion, a big benefit is the connections you make in FFA.”
The FFA sponsor, Brock Horowitz, highlighted major events the chapter participates in throughout the year.
“Our FFA chapter competes in over 10 competitions every year at the section and state level, placing in the top five in the state in events such as Dairy Food Products, Poultry, and Soils,” Horowitz said. “We also participate in several community service-related tasks, such as helping out during the Marigold Festival weekend and maintaining the Kiwanis Garden. Our chapter also attends national and state conventions, as well as leadership training conferences such as Ground Zero.”
“My favorite part about FFA would have to be when we get to wear our official dress because it shows how far we have come. Also is when we have meetings and we get to see all of the things we are doing in our community.” Cathi Allen, a senior at PCHS, shares her favorite part of FFA.
In November, FFA will be starting their Fall Leaf Rake event. Horowitz added that this is an event where students a part of FFA volunteer to rake community members’ yards.
Make sure you keep an eye out for future FFA events, as they may be something that could benefit you.
