Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce Hosts Community Prayer Breakfast Celebrating Local FAITH IN ACTION

The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its annual Community Prayer Breakfast, bringing together community leaders, residents, and faith-based organizations to recognize the impact of ministries and individuals serving others throughout the Pekin area. A panel of faith leaders included Heather Robertson, Pastor at St. Paul United Church of Christ; Dave Jane, Pastor at Connect Church; Misti Cave, Social Worker at Pekin Police Department; and Cheryl Sherwood, Associate Pastor at Pekin First Church of the Nazarene.

The event highlighted the impact of collaboration between faith-based organizations and local businesses play in strengthening the community through service, compassion, and outreach. Attendees gathered for a morning of reflection, fellowship, and recognition of those making a meaningful difference in the lives of local families, children, and individuals in need. Several organizations and individuals were nominated by community members for their ongoing commitment to serving others.

Dream Center Peoria was recognized for its work supporting families living in poverty throughout Peoria and surrounding communities. The organization operates a 24/7 homeless shelter and provides programs focused on youth development, job readiness, career pathways, and trade school opportunities, helping individuals move toward long-term stability.

First Baptist Church of Pekin was acknowledged for its mentorship and food ministry programs. Through the Kids Hope mentoring program at Jefferson Elementary School, church members invest time and encouragement in the lives of local students. The church also operates a weekly food pantry serving families in need.

St. Paul United Church of Christ was recognized for its broad community outreach initiatives. The church supports residents through its food pantry, the Pekin Outreach Initiative free lunch program, Moms Who Care, children’s literacy support through local schools, donation drives, and community service projects including meal preparation for the Salvation Army and participation in Relay for Life.

First United Methodist Church of Pekin was honored for its work assisting families in need of housing and support. Through its Charis House ministry, the church has helped several families regain stability and rebuild their lives. The congregation is also expanding its housing outreach through Providence Place, a duplex currently being developed to provide housing for additional families. The church also supports the community through snack packs for students, a quarterly free community meal called Open Table, and a Good Samaritan Fund that assists individuals experiencing hardship.

Trinity Lutheran Church was recognized for its long-standing Giving Tree outreach program. Since 1976, the ministry has provided more than 6,000 winter coats, hats, and gloves to children in Pekin Public School District 108. The program, which will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026, ensures that local children have warm clothing during the winter months.

Faith Baptist Christian School was acknowledged for its role in preparing young people to become caring and responsible members of the community. The school emphasizes both academic success and character development while encouraging students to participate in community events and service opportunities.

First Church of God was recognized for several community-focused initiatives including a weekly food bank, a community garden, and providing space and support for youth organizations and activities.

City Church was nominated for its support of community activities, including providing concessions for local football events that bring families and residents together.

HOPE Church was acknowledged for its weekly pizza dinner ministry, offering a welcoming space where individuals can gather for a meal and fellowship.

Community member Keith Culp was recognized for his volunteer work building accessibility ramps for residents who need assistance entering and exiting their homes safely. His efforts have helped many individuals maintain independence and mobility.

River of Life Church was also recognized for its dedication to serving individuals facing significant need in the community, including continuing the mission of Christian Civic Outreach.

Pekin First Church of the Nazarene was honored for its community involvement, including hosting the Pekin Marigold Festival Art in the Park vendor breakfast and preparing snack pack bags for use of the Pekin Police Department Social Worker.

Chamber leaders noted that the Community Prayer Breakfast serves as an opportunity to celebrate the many ways faith-based organizations contribute to the well-being of the Pekin community.

"The nominations we received reflect the heart of this community,” organizers shared. “These churches, ministries, schools, and volunteers are meeting real needs every day and helping make Pekin a stronger, more compassionate place to live.”
