S’Pekin Dragon Places at State

Pekin Community High School (PCHS) senior, Brooklynn Garcia, attended the state speech competition held at the Peoria Civic Center on February 20-21, 2026. Garcia placed 5th in the state competition for her event, original comedy, where the speaker writes a humorous skit portraying all characters involved.
Garcia explained that placing 5th in state “was really cool and to know that I was fifth in the whole state and top five in the whole state was absolutely insane. It was such an amazing experience, and I was so excited because I worked so hard on the piece that I had and it was a reflection of my real life and so I felt really connected to the piece so in the end, it was so exciting to be able to place that high in the whole state.”
Garcia didn’t always plan to be on the PCHS Speech team.
Garcia explained that she “wasn’t going to do it, but first semester of this year I ended up in Scott Pyle’s speech class, and I found out that he used to be the theater director. I asked him if he could help me with my audition piece for the fall play and he agreed. I thought he was absolutely insane, but he convinced me to do speech team.”
Pyle, S’pekin Dragons head coach, commented on Garcia by stating that “the talent was always there.”
Garcia’s plans for post-graduate studies include going to school for early elementary education, as well as participating in college speech and college theatre.
“I really enjoy public speaking, so I hope I get to get more into it as I progress in my education,” Garcia stated.
Outside of speech and school, Garcia can be found doing theater—playing Donna Sheridan in PCHS’s upcoming spring production of “Mamma Mia.” She joined theater during the second semester of her junior year. She was featured in “Little Women” and “Murder On the Orient Express.” Garcia’s cast mates describe her as highly energetic and kind.
We are so lucky to have Brooklynn Garcia as a positive role model and amazing public speaker representing PCHS!
