Family Reading Fun in the Pool!

On February 19, 2026, the YWCA of Pekin’s Family Literacy and Aquatics programs welcomed more than 20 families to the pool for an evening of water fun and reading. Lifeguards Abi Hayden and Parker Herrin delighted children and families alike as they debuted their roles as Mermaid Gail and Pirate Parker, entertaining guests and sharing stories throughout the evening.

Mermaid Gail invited little ones to gather around her clamshell for story time before floating across the pool to read to families enjoying the water. She later made a splash by swimming and playing with the children. The Literacy Center also prepared a special library of waterproof books that families could bring right into the pool, along with a variety of water games and toys for participants of all ages to enjoy.

Meanwhile, Pirate Parker spent time with families ashore in the Mermaid Café, where guests enjoyed ocean-themed drinks and snacks. Families were encouraged to read together and take part in creative activities including coloring pages, bookmark making, and word games.

Our dedicated aquatics team ensured that everyone stayed safe while having fun, and Family Literacy Coordinator Timber Cooper helped make the evening a memorable experience for all who attended.

Join us this spring for our next Pirates & Mermaids Swimming Event! The date and time will be announced on our website at www.ywcapekin.org and on our Facebook page, @YWCA Pekin.
