A Word from Mayor Mary - Happy 250th, America!
This year, our nation is celebrating a remarkable milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For over two and a half centuries, Americans have worked to build stronger communities, expand opportunities, and preserve the freedoms that define our country. Here in Pekin, we are excited to join in this historic celebration while also reflecting on our own community’s rich history and bright future.
Our community was built by people with vision, determination, and a belief that this area could become something special. Their efforts laid the foundation for the city we know today, and it is important that we continue telling those stories for future generations.
As part of our local celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the City will be creating a new 50-year time capsule. This capsule will provide a snapshot of life in Pekin today and will be preserved for future residents to discover decades from now. It is a unique opportunity to capture who we are as a community, what we value, and what life looks like in 2026. While we can only imagine what Pekin will look like when the capsule is opened, I hope future generations will see a community that was proud of its history and optimistic about its future.
We are also excited about efforts to preserve and celebrate Pekin’s earliest beginnings. Local historian and community advocate Roger Brotherton has been working on plans for a replica of the original Tharp Cabin, first built by Jonathan Tharp in 1824 and the structure that marked the beginning of Pekin. This project will help bring an important piece of our history to life and provide residents and visitors with a deeper understanding of how our community was founded. It is a wonderful example of how preserving our past helps strengthen our connection to the place we call home.
Of course, no celebration of America would be complete without fireworks. The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce is once again organizing our community’s Fourth of July festivities and is planning to add some extra pizzazz to this year’s celebrations. The Chamber continues to do an outstanding job creating events that bring people together, and we appreciate all the work that goes into making these celebrations memorable for residents and visitors alike.
As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the people and events that shaped both our nation and our community. Milestones like this remind us that we are part of a much larger story—one that connects generations past, present, and future.
The same spirit that built our nation 250 years ago is alive today in communities like Pekin. It is found in volunteers who give their time, business owners who invest in our future, families who put down roots, and residents who care deeply about making our city a better place.
I hope you will join us throughout the coming year as we celebrate our country’s history, honor Pekin’s heritage, and look forward to the opportunities ahead. The best way to honor those who came before us is to continue building a community worthy of those who will come after us.
Happy Independence Day, and God bless America.
