Special Olympics at the YWCA Pekin! Go Sirens!
Special Olympics began in Illinois with the first games at Soldier Field in July 1968 thanks to Eunice Kennedy Shriver. There are now more than 6 million athletes and Unified partners in 170 countries. The importance of the Special Olympics cannot be overstated. It offers athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship. Beyond the physical benefits, Special Olympics helps build self-confidence and social skills, creating a sense of belonging and accomplishment.

Special Olympics Illinois is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The YWCA of Pekin offers the opportunity for individuals to participate in Special Olympics Swimming. The YWCA's warm water pool is fully accessible and provides a safe and supportive environment for athletes of all abilities. With various swim classes and open swim times, participants can enjoy the benefits of swimming while being part of a larger community.

Participating in the Special Olympics Swimming program at the YWCA of Pekin is more than just learning to swim and swimming; it's about being part of a movement that celebrates diversity and inclusion. Whether you're an athlete looking to compete or a family member supporting a loved one, a volunteer interacting with your community or a donor supporting this program-it offers a chance to be part of something truly special.

For more information on how to get involved, visit the Special Olympics Illinois website or contact the YWCA of Pekin at 309-347-2104 or ywcapekin.org. Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference in your community and in the lives of others, help share in the SO Athletes Oath of, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
