Pekin Swimmer Strikes Gold at Special Olympics Illinois
The YWCA of Pekin made a splash at the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games this June, with athlete Bowen Gill and Head Coach Kylie Schimmelpfenning proudly representing YWCA of Pekin and our hometown community in inspiring fashion.
Hosted in Normal, Illinois, the 2025 Summer Games brought together athletes from across the state, each showcasing incredible determination and sportsmanship. Among them, Bowen Gill made an unforgettable mark in the pool.
On Day One, Gill captured a Gold medal in the butterfly event, shaving 6 seconds off his record, a triumphant moment that reflected his months of hard work and training. Day Two brought more excitement as he returned to the pool to compete in freestyle, earning a Silver medal and capping off a stellar weekend of racing. Gill’s performance was not just a win for Pekin—it was a celebration of perseverance and the unifying spirit of the Special Olympics.
Coach Kylie, a devoted mentor at the YWCA of Pekin, played a key role in guiding and supporting Bowen throughout the season. Her steady leadership and dedication to inclusive athletics helped create a positive environment where athletes could thrive, both in competition and in personal growth. For Bowen and Coach Kylie, the Special Olympics was more than just an athletic event—it was a celebration of determination, community, and possibility.
We are proud to have a place in Special Olympics Swimming and look forward to growing our team in 2026!
