YWCA of Pekin Welcomes a Splash of Magic with Sunset MerCon 2025

A wave of enchantment is set to wash over East Peoria and Pekin as the Illinois Merpod hosts its annual Sunset MerCon 2025 from October 3rd to October 5th. This three-day convention, a “MerCon,” brings together a community of merfolk enthusiasts, professional mermaids, and lovers of all things aquatic for a weekend of workshops, performances, and networking.

This year’s event is expected to attract a diverse crowd from across the Midwest and beyond, transforming the area into a vibrant spectacle of tails, scales, and imagination. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including a group swim in a heated pool, a formal masquerade ball, live music performances, vendors, crafts, and activities.

The heart of a MerCon is its community, known as a “pod.” This event is a chance for members of the merfolk community to gather, share their craft, and celebrate their passion. From custom-made silicone tails that can cost thousands of dollars to meticulously crafted fabric tails, the convention is a showcase of incredible artistry and dedication.

Mermaids and mermen, who often work as professional entertainers for parties, aquariums, and special events, will be on hand to share their experiences and skills. The convention features a range of workshops, with topics from tail maintenance and safety to performance techniques and “mer-sighting” etiquette.

Sunset MerCon 2025 is not just for professionals; it’s also for anyone curious about the world of merfolk. The event aims to be family-friendly and welcoming, providing a glimpse into this fantastical subculture. It’s a chance for the public to see firsthand the magic and hard work that goes into bringing these mythical creatures to life.

Organized by The Illinois Merpod, a local group dedicated to promoting the art and community of mermaiding, the convention is a testament to the growth of this unique hobby. The group regularly hosts public appearances and gatherings, and the annual MerCon is the culmination of their efforts.

Whether you’re a seasoned mermaid with a closet full of tails or a land-dweller who has always been fascinated by mermaids, Sunset MerCon 2025 offers a chance to dive into a world of creativity and connection right here in Central Illinois.
