Finding Balance and Purpose Through Volunteering
Life can feel like a lot sometimes. Between family, health, work, and finances, it’s no wonder so many of us feel stretched thin. Our free time is precious, and the thought of adding one more thing can feel overwhelming. Finding balance seems harder than ever.
But here’s the thing — we still get to choose how we spend our time. And when we choose to spend it helping others, it almost never feels wasted. Even if we don’t realize it right away, giving of ourselves often ends up giving something back to us too.
Living with intention means doing good in the world — on purpose. One of the best ways to do that is by volunteering. The Mayo Clinic notes that volunteering isn’t just good for the community — it’s good for you too! It can boost your physical and mental health, give you a sense of purpose, help you learn new skills, and even strengthen your relationships (Thoreson, 2023).
The best part? There are so many ways to get involved locally. Maybe it’s donating items through a church or community drive. Maybe it’s serving meals at a soup kitchen, helping at a food pantry, or volunteering at an outreach center. And if you have more time or a special calling, there are even opportunities to mentor others, volunteer in social programs, or foster children. Whatever you choose, your time and effort truly matter.
Here at the YWCA Adult and Family Literacy program, we depend on community members just like you. Our program is mainly funded by the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Grants (ilsos.gov/departments/library.html), but our real strength comes from volunteers who give an hour or two each week to help adults build new skills and confidence.
You don’t need teaching experience — just a willingness to help. Our learners are adults working to improve their reading, learn English, or prepare for their GED so they can pursue education or better job opportunities. Every session makes a difference.
If you’re curious, we’d love for you to sit in on a tutoring session to see what it’s like. You might just find it’s exactly where you’re meant to be. Call us at 309-347-2104 ext. 4040. Email us at [email protected]
Come see how a little bit of your time can make a big difference — for someone else, and for you too.
