Future Focus Day is a day Pekin Community High School (PCHS) holds for all grades to help guide students’ minds to a goal or career. This is a great opportunity for students at PCHS. Sessions are held in classrooms with some sessions including field trips. PCHS holds three Future Focus Days per school year.
The most recent Future Focus Day had upper class students focus on job shadowing and learning from different speakers.
Senior at PCHS, Daelyn Dills, believes that “Future Focus has helped me decide a career path for when I graduate in a couple months. When I was a freshman, there weren’t a whole lot of things to do, but as a senior, there are so many more activities.”
This most recent Future Focus Day was a success. PCHS and various professionals hosted many different sessions. Examples include: Hands–on STEM learning, cosmetology schooling, ambulance tours, and many more sessions for students.
Biology teacher, Charles Jaques, hosted a careers in biology session that went over various careers and involved looking at plants at the cellular level and slides with various different kinds of things to look at under microscopes.
Jaques says that his “favorite part about Future Focus Day is being able to share experiences with students and to show them pathways they can pursue if they are interested in STEM careers.”
This is just one of the many examples of students and staff at PCHS who enjoy this day.
Jaques commented on this recent Future Focus Day: “I really enjoyed this recent Future Focus Day, especially with the addition of a hands-on component. I felt like a lot of the students enjoyed being able to make slides and use the microscopes to view different tissues and cell types. It’s definitely a session I would be happy to run again.”
As usual, this recent Future Focus Day was once again a success. To get involved in Future Focus Days at PCHS, reach out to Jennifer Anderson at [email protected]. PCHS works hard to create connections between students and community resources.
