Steady Progress Across Pekin

If you have traveled through Pekin recently, you have likely noticed a significant amount of work underway across the community.

While road construction is never without inconvenience, the projects currently in progress along Court Street and other key corridors represent necessary, long-term investments. These are not temporary surface repairs; they are full reconstructions designed to address aging infrastructure below ground while improving safety and reliability above it. This work positions the City to better serve residents and businesses well into the future.

Additional improvements are already planned. Broadway, from Parkway to 14th Street, is scheduled for upcoming construction, and further corridor work is identified in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan. Derby Street is among the next major projects anticipated to move forward within the next year. This is part of a deliberate, phased approach to addressing infrastructure needs in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Beyond major roadways, the City continues to invest in neighborhood-level improvements. Sidewalk replacements, ADA accessibility upgrades, and routine maintenance efforts are ongoing throughout Pekin. These projects may be less visible, but they are essential to maintaining safe, functional, and accessible neighborhoods.

The City has also made measured adjustments to service delivery. The transition to every-other-week recycling was implemented following careful evaluation of operational costs and regional service standards. While any change requires adjustment, this approach allows Pekin to maintain service while exercising fiscal responsibility. The strong participation in the expanded recycling cart program reflects a community that is adapting and continuing to support these efforts.

Maintaining neighborhood quality remains a priority. Increased attention to property maintenance, nuisance abatement, and the management of vacant structures is helping to address problem areas and protect property values. These efforts reinforce a shared expectation for the condition and appearance of our community.

Pekin is also experiencing continued momentum in economic development. Ongoing redevelopment efforts, including the East Court Village project, have received national recognition and demonstrate the City’s ability to successfully reposition key areas for future growth. Additional private investment along the Court Street corridor further reflects growing confidence in Pekin’s direction. These outcomes are the result of consistent planning and a willingness to make strategic decisions that support long-term success.

It is also important to recognize the work of City staff. From infrastructure maintenance to emergency response and daily service delivery, their efforts are critical to the City’s operations. Ensuring they have the equipment and resources necessary to perform their duties safely and effectively remains a core responsibility.

The focus moving forward is clear. Continue addressing infrastructure, maintain reliable services, and respond directly to community needs. Progress is being made through consistent, practical action, not isolated efforts.

There is more work ahead, but the direction is evident. Pekin is making steady, measurable progress, and those results are becoming increasingly visible across the community.

It is an honor to serve Pekin, and I appreciate the continued engagement and support of its residents.
