The Pekin Hometown Voice

A Word from Mayor Mary - National Recognition for Local Progress

Advocating for Pekin in Springfield

A few weeks ago, members of the City’s leadership team traveled to Springfield for the Illinois Municipal League’s Lobby Day to meet with State leaders and advocate for issues that matter to Pekin’s future. Joining me were our City Manager and Director of Economic Development as we met with representatives from the Governor’s Office as well as Senators Dave Koehler, Sally Turner, and Neil Anderson.

These conversations are an important reminder that the future of our community is shaped not only by decisions made locally, but also by strong partnerships at the State level. Pekin’s voice deserves to be heard when policies, funding opportunities, and legislation are being discussed, and we were proud to represent our residents during these meetings.

One of the major topics we discussed was the development of a public river port along the Illinois River. This initiative has the potential to create significant economic opportunities for Pekin and the surrounding region by strengthening transportation infrastructure, supporting industry, and expanding access to river commerce. Our location along the Illinois River remains one of our greatest assets, and we continue working to position Pekin for long-term economic growth tied to that advantage.

We also provided input on statewide housing initiatives and discussed the importance of ensuring communities like Pekin have the tools necessary to address unique housing needs in our communities rather than statewide policies that may miss the mark on local issues. Like many cities throughout Illinois, we are seeing increased demand for housing options ranging from single-family homes to workforce housing and senior living opportunities. Thoughtful planning and strong State partnerships will be essential as communities work to meet those needs responsibly.

Another important topic involved regulations and local authority related to homeless individuals on public property. While this is a complex issue affecting communities across the country, local governments must balance compassion with public safety and the appropriate use of parks, sidewalks, and other publicly-owned spaces. We appreciated the opportunity to share Pekin’s perspective as a pioneer in this area and to discuss the challenges municipalities face as they work to support vulnerable individuals while also protecting the broader community.

Meetings like these are valuable because they allow us to build relationships, communicate local priorities, and ensure Pekin remains part of important conversations happening at the State level. Progress often depends on collaboration, and maintaining open communication with our State partners helps position our community for future opportunities.

I want to thank the Governor’s Office and Senators Koehler, Turner, and Anderson for taking the time to meet with us and discuss issues important to Pekin. We appreciate their willingness to listen and engage thoughtfully on behalf of the communities they serve.

Our team remains committed to advocating for policies and investments that strengthen Pekin, support economic development, and improve quality of life for our residents. By continuing to engage at every level of government, we are helping ensure Pekin’s future remains strong.
