Sixteen Central Illinois County Clerks & Recorder of Deeds released a joint America 250 Video featuring a reading of the Declaration of Independence against a backdrop of their various County Courthouses and historical community landmarks. Organized by Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds John C. Ackerman, the video draws from the historical work of 2nd Continental Congress Clerk Timothy Matlack, who in his position was responsible for taking the notes and drafts of the Continental Congress and writing the finalized text of the Declaration of Independence we all view and cherish today. Additionally, it was Timothy Matlack’s responsibility to make copies of the documents and make them available for public review, assignments that are today performed by independently elected County Clerks and Recorder of Deeds throughout the State of Illinois. The cursive writing of the Declaration of Independence we have all viewed and cherish as a national treasure is the work of Timothy Matlack.
